3 words is the maximum your subject lines should be. Ideally 1-2 words.
A lot of people that follow this newsletter say to me:
“I don’t know why but your subject lines always get me to open your newsletter”
The reason is that I understand that your subject line isn't where you explain your email.
It's where you spark curiosity so they can’t resist opening it.
Now these newsletters are what I’d call “marketing” emails. The same message goes out to thousands of recipients.
But for sales emails they can be personalized to the individual you’re targeting.
So show you’ve done your research in the subject line.
Here are 5 examples:
Real Madrid (if they’re a fan)
AI Engineers (if they’re hiring that role)
NYC Trip (if they just posted about one)
Steve Jenkins (a close colleague’s name)
Amsterdam Office (if they just opened one)
And here are 5 I’ve personally used with real prospects to get them to open:
Pete Sampras (for a pro tennis player who knew him)
Thierry Henry (for a former teammate at NY Red Bulls)
Huddersfield (for a diehard lower-league football fan)
Radio 2 Interview (for someone who’d just been featured)
SDR Hiring (my go-to more than once)
Cheers,
